Preparation Decision Command An Army

How to Stay Under the Star Limit

The budget cap behind every match — when this decision matters, how to make it, and exactly what it can and cannot tell you.

1 · Quick Answer

This guide does not choose your army for you. It answers one decision question: does my current army fit the Star Limit, and if not, what do I change first? Sum the Star cost of every unit you selected. Under or equal to the limit shown in game → your army is legal, deploy it. Over → cut or swap units until it fits, starting with the most expensive. That is the whole rule; everything below explains when and why to apply it.

2 · When This Decision Matters

Only at one moment: after you have picked units and before you deploy. It is a preparation-phase gate, not a mid-match call. It also matters again after every balance update — unit costs and limits can change, and an army that fit last week may not fit today. If you are mid-match or already lost, this guide is not the right tool; use the failure diagnosis instead.

3 · Decision Flow

STARTYour units are selected; the limit is shown in game.
SUMAdd every unit's Star cost: total = cost₁ + cost₂ + …
CHECKIs total ≤ limit?
YESArmy is legal. Deploy. The limit question is closed — strength is a different question (see section 8).
NOCut the most expensive unit first, or swap a high-cost unit for a cheaper one serving a similar role.
LOOPRe-sum after each change. Repeat until total ≤ limit.
ENDLegal army, or you run the calculator to see exactly how many Stars to cut.

The flow is deterministic: same inputs, same answer, every time. No ranking, no "best army".

4 · Why This Decision Works

The rule works because it checks a hard constraint before soft factors. An over-limit army is not deployable (or starts at a structural disadvantage — sources describe it as a cap, check the exact behavior in game), so no judgment about strength, formation, or matchup matters until the constraint is satisfied. Ordering decisions by "eliminate hard failures first" is not a game insight — it is how constraint checking works everywhere. That is why this is the first check in the failure diagnosis tool as well.

5 · Game Mechanism / Background

The Star Limit is the budget cap for the army you bring into a match in Command An Army. Every unit has a Star cost; the sum of your selected units must not exceed the current limit. The limit and each unit's cost are displayed in game while you build your army. Treat the in-game display as the authoritative number — secondary sources disagree or go stale after balance patches, and GameMeta does not maintain a unit-cost database.

6 · Evidence

Claim: a Star Limit budget mechanic exists

Graded E3 · Corroborated — described consistently by multiple independent game guides. Not GameMeta-verified in game.

Claim: the exact limit value and unit costs

Graded E1 · Official — the in-game build screen itself. This guide deliberately does not restate numbers that the game displays authoritatively and patches can change.

Claim: the sum-and-compare procedure

Not a game fact — pure arithmetic over values you provide. Carries no evidence risk.

7 · Common Misinterpretations

  • "Under the limit means my army is strong." No. Legal ≠ good. The limit only gates deployability; it says nothing about unit quality, synergy, formation, or matchup.
  • "I should spend every Star available." Unverified. Whether a full-budget army outperforms a cheaper one is a claim no reliable source currently supports here — so GameMeta does not make it.
  • "The calculator judges my army." It does one comparison: total ≤ limit. It will not tell you what to cut beyond cost, and it never ranks units.

8 · What This Guide Cannot Tell You

  • Which units are strong, or which to cut for reasons other than cost.
  • Formation, positioning, or command timing — formation impact on battle outcomes cannot currently be confirmed from reliable sources.
  • Exact numeric limits or unit costs after a balance patch — check the in-game build screen.
  • Why you lost a specific match. For that, use the failure diagnosis — it structures what you observed without pretending to know the cause.
